Abstract

This chapter elaborates on some of the basic tenets of cognitive semantics. It illustrates these tenets with examples from cognitive semantic studies on (Biblical) Hebrew. These insights will form the methodological framework for the applied semantic analyses. The chapter presents with an excursus in which it discusses the position of the proposed cognitive-semantic methodology in the evolution of Hebrew semantic studies. It sketches the differences and similarities between the cognitive-semantic approach, on the one hand, and the historical and-more recent-structuralist approaches that constitute the methodological paradigms of contemporary Hebrew semantics, on the other. Keywords: cognitive semantics; excursus; Hebrew semantics
