Abstract
The chapter presents, for the very first time, a detailed review of the most important achievements in the fabrication of various nanostructured tin oxides by simple anodic oxidation of metallic tin. Electrochemical fabrication of nanoporous SnOx layers is described in detail in terms of conditions applied during anodization and their influence on the morphology and composition of porous films. Special attention is put on the conditions that should be fulfilled in order to obtain crack-free nanoporous SnOx films as well as on the attempts of the controllable synthesis of oxide layers with other morphologies. Finally, examples of practical applications of nanostructured anodic tin oxides including photovoltaics, photoelectrochemical water splitting, photo- and electrocatalysis, gas sensors, and energy storage systems are also described.
