Abstract

The analyses in this chapter found variations in the levels of democratic satisfaction and the components of support for democracy across the nations of Eastern and Western Europe. The map of satisfaction with democracy in Europe suggests that differences are both visible and clear if we compare Eastern and Western Europe. The main research question developed in this chapter is based on which aspects drive satisfaction with democracy in European nations. Several theories were presented and tested: the electoral winner-loser theory, the cultural theory, and the performance evaluation theory. In order to test the impact of the theories and make them more operative, they were grouped into two sets of variables: long-term and shortterm explanatory forces. The analyses suggest that political stability , unemployment rate and being an ex-communist country are highly significant as aggregatelevel predictors of support for democracy . Keywords: democratic satisfaction; ex-communist country; Western Europe
