Abstract

This chapter discusses the history and development of the library of University of Southern California (USC). Since 1984, the library at USC has taken experimental but practical steps to develop new kinds of library services and to provide new kinds of access to information. The first step was taken in July 1985 with the creation of a Division for Academic Information Services (AIS) within the library. The AIS manages all automated library services, including the integrated library system. It is also responsible for developing new projects related to electronic access to information, such as the establishment of the satellite libraries and the USC info system. In the USC library, the organization of AIS points beyond the traditional role of library automation. The AIS is responsible for the selection, design, installation, and maintenance of the library's automated integrated library system. The AIS is also responsible for electronic access to scholarly information and, in general, for the Central Library System's management and development of information technologies.
