Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) printing for building and construction has gained much attention from both the industry and academics in the past few years. It promises to revolutionize the construction industry with the potential of freeform architecture, less material waste, reduced construction costs, and increased worker safety. Furthermore, the technology also contributes toward a sustainable environment as the printing material is only deposited where it is necessary for the 3D printing process. This chapter reviews the remarkable advances in 3D printing for building and construction. It introduces the most popular 3D concrete printing technologies and materials and presents case studies in advanced applications. Although the use of sustainable and recyclable materials in 3D printing for building and construction is still in its early stage, the recent development is discussed as well.
