Abstract

This chapter describes fiber optic endoscopes, laser fibers, medical illuminators, and biosensors. It focuses on medical applications, although all these products have broader application. Fiber optic lighting systems have many commercial applications; they are used for emergency lighting, automotive lighting, traffic signals, signage, lighting sensors, commercial, and decorative lighting. They are also very useful in medical applications, coupled with fiberscopes or microscopes. Fiber optic lighting systems can be placed in high magnetic fields, such as near MRI machines, and can be used in stand-alone applications in this manner. While fiber sensors have broader industrial applications, especially in hard-to-reach places and hazardous areas where there is a danger from electrical sparks igniting explosions, they also have medical applications, especially working in conjunction with endoscopes. The use of fiber optics in endoscopy is the most significant application of fiber optics to the field of medicine.
