Abstract

Water pollution and drinking water scarcity are among the various threatening issues that humanity faces. Treatment strategies such as membrane filtration, electrochemical processes, photocatalysis, Fenton oxidation, UV treatment and ozonation are generally employed for wastewater purification. Achieving wastewater purification by a single treatment protocol is a challenging task. Therefore, the integration of wastewater-treatment technologies is necessary to enhance the effectiveness of water treatment. Here, the integration of membrane technologies with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as Fenton oxidation, photocatalysis and electrochemical methods is discussed. A separate section is dedicated to explaining the polymeric materials involved in the assembly of membranes and the strategies involved in membrane fabrication. Basic mechanistic aspects involved in the Fenton oxidation, electro-Fenton, photocatalysis and electrocatalytic water treatment are also explained in detail. This chapter comprehensively explains the strategies for material fabrication and integration with the membrane system. Additionally, the chapter summarises the future directions and challenges involved in combining membrane technologies with AOPs.
