Abstract

The increasing importance of small molecules cannot be underrated owing to their variety of applications in drug discovery, agriculture industry, and electronics. With increasing concerns over environmental degradation all over the world, the concept of green and clean synthesis has emerged. In view of that, ionic liquid–supported liquid-phase synthesis has been developed. Alterable physical and chemical properties of ionic liquids by mixing appropriate cations and anions to meet the required need coupled with environmentally benign feasibility, recyclability, and reusability features make them ideal for green synthesis of small organic compounds. This chapter gives an overview of recent advancement in the synthesis of small heterocyclic molecules utilizing heterocycles-based ionic liquid–supported reagents and catalysts.
