Abstract

This chapter deals with experimental design and sample size and power calculations. First, the notation used for statistical study design is introduced, and the different types of study are described. Terms such as experimental studies, observational studies, random errors, systematic errors, and bias are introduced. Methods for minimizing random and systematic errors are described, specifically blocking (matching), blinding, multiple measurement, and randomization. Sample size and power calculations are introduced as a way of optimizing study design. It is also shown how sample size and power calculations can be performed using MATLAB.
