Abstract
This chapter examines the developments in the design and operation of both autogenous and semi-autogenous systems of grinding for size reduction in metallurgical operations. Grinding mills in which comminution takes place without grinding aids are known as autogenous grinding (AG) mills or fully autogenous grinding (FAG) mills. The chapter describes the design of these mills focusing on the AG/FAG mill circuits and discusses the operation of these mills, highlighting the role of feed size, mill volume, mill charge, mill speed, effective grinding length, and ball wear. The mill power is usually determined in a laboratory scale mill followed by a pilot plant trial. The value is then scaled up to the desired commercial size. The chapter provides various equations used in the process and illustrates it with examples. The selection of a mill for autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding depends on the intrinsic property of the ore and the total power requirement of the mill and the circuit configuration.
