Abstract

This chapter explores the turn to practice in recent ecclesiologies, comparing John Milbank’s, Pete Ward’s and Graham Ward’s approaches to church. Ulrich Schmiedel argues that the model of a solid ecclesial identity, favored by John Milbank, comes close to Troeltsch’s sectarianism, while the model of a liquid ecclesial identity, favored by Pete Ward, comes close to Troeltsch’s mysticism. Graham Ward conceptualizes a political ecclesiology in-between the solid and the liquid. However, Schmiedel argues that Graham Ward misses the chance to develop an ecclesiology which is open to the other when he utilizes Carl Schmitt’s concept of politics. Hence, although these three ecclesiologies take practice as their point of departure, none of them allow for what Schmiedel portrayed as a togetherness of trust.
