Abstract
Cancer is a killer disease across the globe claiming lives. Aberrant glycosylation and sialylations have been studies to be hallmark in cancer associated with tumor invasion, and increased metastatic potential. Aberrant expression of sialic acid and their conjugates has been reported in different cancer and has been studied as diagnostic and prognostic markers in different cancers. Sialylation has been also studied in targeted delivery of anticancer drugs and molecules. We study in this chapter the importance and role of sialic acid in cancer under the headings of (i) sialic acid and serum sialylation as biomarkers in cancer, (ii) gangliosides, (iii) sia-siglec axis and cancer, (iv) sialyl Tn in cancer, (v) sialic acid and sialidase, and (vi) selectin in cancer and sialic acid and cancer targeting, developments, and challenges.
