Abstract

This chapter discusses observation and analysis of human non-verbal communication using some experiments. Vocalizations are so pervasive in everyday life that one tends to overlook the ongoing silent communication signals that surround. Yet, these nonverbal signals are crucial in daily lives, whether one is conscious of them or not. These signals often support and reinforce talking, but they can also act as independent sources of communication. Smiles comprise a set of non-verbal graded signals, running through a continuous set of changes from a simple closed-mouth smile all the way to a full, open-mouthed grin. People use this set of signals abundantly every day, in many different situations. Recipients respond in what seems to be organized, meaningful ways. This exercise is designed to help to explore human non-verbal communication by observing smiles in a variety of contexts and by using one's observations to analyze the role that these signals may play in human interaction.
