Abstract

This chapter focuses on the husbandry and health issues of common captive lizard species. The success of maintaining healthy lizards in captivity depends on the owner's ability to achieve two main goals: providing adequate nutrition and providing proper environment. Veterinarians must be aware of the specific requirements for the lizard species being treated before making any assessment or recommendation. There is an abundance of misinformation about the captive care of lizard species. This misinformation may start with the breeder or seller of the animal, the pet store clerk, friends, or others, who, out of ignorance, disseminate incorrect pet care information. The majority of diseases observed in captive reptiles are directly associated with improper husbandry. This chapter discusses nutritional and environmental requirements as a general guideline for maintaining herbivorous, carnivorous, insectivorous, and omnivorous lizard species in captivity. Husbandry requirements are discussed with the natural habitats of lizards in mind. In addition to presenting husbandry information, this chapter discusses the veterinary care of lizards. The veterinary information presented focuses on treatment protocols that range from basic to advanced veterinary skills that are needed for proper care of these reptile patients.
