Abstract

The economic well-being of the elderly population has risen dramatically in recent decades, yet the elderly are more likely to be poor or near poor than are most other adult age groups. The review of evidence on different measures of poverty and housing problems shows that significant segments of the elderly population-in particular, many elderly renters-have unmet needs for housing assistance. The diversity of need among the elderly suggests that elderly housing assistance should be focused on subgroups, which are currently not well served by assistance programs.
