Abstract

The anti-theft/content alarms consist of an audible alarm, visual blinking lights, fuel/ignition interruption, or any combination of the three. Dealer-installed systems are not Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and are also considered aftermarket. The most significant difference between OEM and aftermarket systems lies in the fact that the components of aftermarket systems are attached to existing vehicle electronics and are not an integral part of the on-board vehicle systems. The transponder vehicle anti-theft system, also referred to as Radio Frequency Identification System (RFID), is currently the most prevalent electronic protection installed on new vehicles worldwide. The chapter details about the components of a typical transponder system. When investigating the theft of a transponder-equipped vehicle, several procedures are used to clone or program new transponder keys that must be considered.
