Abstract

This chapter discusses hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) products and the current sources of HPCs for transplantation. The sources are mentioned to be from peripheral blood (HPC, Apheresis), bone marrow (HPC, Marrow) and umbilical cord blood (HPC, Cord Blood). All three sources can be used for autologous transplantation, syngeneic transplantation between identical twins or allogeneic transplantation. The selection of HPC source and donor must take into account a number of factors, including the underlying disease, the recipient's medical condition, the pre-transplant preparative regimen and donor/recipient preferences of HPC harvest. In HPC, Apheresis, the HPC product in harvested by apheresis from the peripheral blood of donors and it is the most commonly used source for transplantation. HPC, Marrow is the used less frequently for transplantation, largely because of the greater difficulty and invasiveness of the collection procedure. HPC, Cord Blood is the HPC product sourced from umbilical cord, which is known to be a source of high levels of HPC that can be used for transplantation.
