Abstract
A planar perfectly conducting surface does not support a surface electromagnetic wave. A periodically structured perfectly conducting surface does. This effect makes possible the binding of surface electromagnetic waves to structured metal surfaces in the gigahertz and terahertz frequency regions, where metals are well described by perfect conductors. Theoretical and experimental studies of the propagation and guiding of surface electromagnetic waves on one- and two-dimensional periodically structured perfectly conducting surfaces are discussed in this chapter, together with applications of such low frequency surface waves.
