Abstract

The human population is increasing in geometric progression during the last decade, which resulted global climate change due to the increase in the carbon-dioxide consumption. Among the various environmental stresses caused by climate change, there is a prediction of more frequent flooding due to repetitive heavy rainfall. Flooding stress is considered a major factor of grain yield loss. There is a significant variation in plants vulnerability and tolerance mechanism to flooding stress. Therefore various studies relating to flooding tolerance mechanism have been conducted. In order to produce flood-resistant high-yielding crop, it is necessary to not only study the various factors of flooding stress but also to understand how plants sense and respond to that flooding stress-causing factors. Therefore the current chapter aims to introduce various flooding-tolerance mechanisms in different crops, which may contribute to the improvement of tolerant crops.
