Abstract

The application of big data in public transportation is a profound reform that will revolutionize the service concept, management mechanism, and business model of the public transportation industry. Big data have far-reaching theoretical and practical significance. In this chapter, the application of big data in public transportation planning, operation, and management is introduced from the aspects of the classification and processing of these big data and their combination with other data. Based on our previous research results, the application of public transportation big data in areas such as bus arrival times prediction, commuting behavior mining, and performance evaluation of public transportation networks (E-Science public transportation big data platform) is introduced. In addition, case studies are provided using data from the Beijing public transportation system to introduce the application of public transportation big data in practical problems.
