Abstract

This chapter provides an in-depth discussion of magnetic recording media, which contains all recorded information with which most users are concerned. The focus is on thin-film media for high-density magnetic recording. Many refer to a magnetic disk drive simply as a magnetic disk, although it requires a lot of other components to function at all. Magnetic disks are also classified as flexible disks and rigid disks based on the substrates used. A magnetic recording layer is composed of either closely packed magnetic particles or continuous magnetic thin films deposited on a substrate. Therefore, magnetic disks are often called particulate or thin-film disks, respectively. Basic magnetic medium requirements and particular media are summarized. Future alternative media such as keepered media and patterned media are also discussed.
