Abstract

Evaluation by metrics typically relies on one or more indicators, which are typically used as a proxy for quality or impact. A first set of indicators pertains to collaboration. These indicators quantify the “amount” of collaboration in a body of literature. Next, we discuss the h-index, its advantages and disadvantages as well as some variants, including the g-index. Further indicators include the author impact factor, success index and success multipliers, and percentile rank score. Indicators can also be studied dynamically (through time) using various time series. We then discuss the outgrow index, indicators of diffusion, openness and affinity indices, Prathap’s thermodynamic framework, and Characteristic Scores and Scales. The chapter closes with some general observations and recommendations.
