Abstract

Nanotechnology is one of the most revolutionary technologies in the recent years. The applications of nanotechnology are too many to count. The applications of nanotechnology are expanding into almost all areas of research and industrial fields. The impacts of nanotechnology and nanofibers in the development of advanced materials and techniques for filtration and separation have been very promising and are rising. Nanofiber technology is an expedient technology and it presents the potential for treatment of wastewater, surface water, groundwater, as well as separation of air/dust, dirt, soot, metal ions, microorganisms, and other organic and inorganic substances. The outstanding advantages of membrane technology are its high efficiency, low power consumption, and minimum investment. Electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENMs) also possess high surface area, high porosity, tunable pore size, flexibility, lightweight, and high permeability, which make them ideal candidates for filtration, separation, and other membrane applications. This chapter summarizes recent developments in filtration and separation science and technology and electrospun nanofiber applications. The ENMs are a cutting-edge membrane technology, which provides a significantly high flux and high rejection rate, that can be used both in dry and wet filtration applications.
