Abstract
This chapter discusses the column internals, which are parts of the apparatus that are constructed to ensure proper conditioning for the operation of the packing. They include parts such as: support plates, hold-down plates, liquid distributors and redistributors, gas (vapor) distributors, gas-liquid phase separators, and liquid collectors. The main function of the support plates is to bear the packing bed. It must correspond to the following requirements such as: high permissible gas and liquid superficial velocities (as high as those at the loading point of the packing in the column), fine stability at little own weight, availability of different types of materials to solve various corrosion problems, and easily installed in the column (segment construction). The support plates are divided into two groups: the support plates for random packings and the support plates for structured packings. For a smaller column a modified multi-beam support plate is useful. While for greater apparatuses, like in the sulfuric acid production, the ceramic supporting plates can be used.
