Abstract
A multibase query processor was designed to decompose a global query into subqueries against the local schemas. The query language of multibase is DAPLEX. It provides certain procedural constructs like iteration with the data model, based on a functional paradigm. Amoco distributed database system (ADDS) uses an extended relational data model to integrate relational, network, and hierarchical databases. ADDS generated an equivalent description of different local databases in connection to the ADDS data model, using an extended relational algebra with joins, natural joins, outer joins, intersection, and selects. The ADDS approach differed from the functional one taken in multibase. Mermaid allows the user to manipulate the IE stored under various relational DBMS running on different machines using structured-query language and a common language called Ariel. The SQL or Ariel queries get translated into a distributed intermediate language (DIL). For each DBMS, there are driver processes at the local site. The driver translates DIL subqueries to the local DBMS query language.
