Abstract

This chapter focuses on the analysis of space trusses. The space truss analysis program is capable of analyzing any plane truss. The chapter presents how the extension of the stiffness method of analysis to deal with space trusses has been achieved in program TRUSS2. This program also accounts for initial strains, and it separates the oversize and temperature effects so that an overall temperature rise may be accounted for without the need to calculate beforehand, the free extensions for each member. In the program TRUSS2, the stiffness matrix is held as in TRUSS1 in a single subscripted array that commences, as before, with the leading diagonal of the formal K matrix. The program TRUSS2 processes up to three load cases simultaneously but the initial strain and temperature effects are added to the first load case only.
