Abstract

Animal models have been used extensively in studies of bone and joint diseases. Despite the inherent limitations of animal models, several of them have significantly improved our understanding of the onset and progress of bone and joint diseases. As there are various kinds of disorders, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis deserve special attention due to their high incidence and disability rate. Animal models discussed here include induced models and genetically manipulated or spontaneous arthritis models. In this chapter, we describe the advances in animal models for joint and bone diseases, as well as discuss their advantages and disadvantages.
