Abstract

The e States seeking admission in the early Charter years had had the task of securing it. For the States comprising the logjam, admission had been significantly delayed, and their candidacies had been subject to extensive debate. A number of States emerging from the final phase of decolonization nevertheless were not immediately admitted to the United Nations. The dissolution of socialist federations in Europe in the early 1990s led to the establishment of independence of a large number of States. A number of States which gained independence in the 1960s and 1970s did not immediately seek admission. These were the small island States of the Pacific. They were admitted as UN member States in 1999 and 2000. The Security Council on 24 July 2002 recommended Switzerland for admission. The General Assembly on 10 September 2002 admitted Switzerland as the 190th member State. Keywords: Europeanneutral States; European micro-states; Switzerland; UN Charter
