Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the major culprit for increasing global warming potential (GWP). Other pollutants such as unburned hydrocarbon (UHC), carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), oxides of sulfur (SOx), and particulates released from combustion devices also affect human health. It is believed that the adoption of renewable energy sources for power generation is expected to play a major role in curbing the CO2 and other emissions. Among the renewable energy sources, biomass source has distinct advantages such as cheaper conversion cost, reliable, and continuously available. Biodiesel is the most important resource of sustainable energy and it is produced in large quantities around the world. Large quantity of biodiesel production also generates significant quantities of deposits and by-products which raise environmental and economic concerns. This study presents the compilations associated with the raw materials used for biodiesel production, biodiesel production methods and processing techniques, by-products, and utilization of these by-products in the form of energy.
