Abstract

This chapter focuses on the wide range of anisotropic and/or periodically nonhomogeneous dielectric materials that may be partnered with metals to create interfaces which guide the propagation of SPP waves. With homogeneous anisotropic dielectric materials, the characteristics of the SPP wave vary with propagation direction and the range of propagation directions may be limited. Periodically nonhomogeneous dielectric materials, whether isotropic or not, may support the propagation of multiple SPP-wave modes in a specified direction and at a specified frequency. Nanotechnology provides the means to design and fabricate materials with desirable dielectric properties which may be used to support the propagation of SPP waves with desirable characteristics. Applications to enhanced SPR sensing of chemicals appear promising.
