Abstract

Social innovation in health uses community engagement to improve health and spur social change. Social innovation has been used widely to develop more resilient health systems in diverse settings. The Social Innovation in Health Initiative (SIHI) network supports research, advocacy, and capacity building on social innovation in health. This chapter provides examples of social innovation from Malawi, Peru, the Philippines, and China. During COVID-19, social innovation provided a framework to adapt health services and make them more accountable, transparent, effective, and equitable. The community engagement which is a hallmark of social innovation may increase the sustainability of programs over time. Further research is needed to continue the development of this important field.
