Abstract

Singhbhum Protocontinent comprises the North Singhbhum Fold Belt that includes the metasediments and metavolcanics (Dalma Volcanics) of Palaeoproterozoic age sandwiched between two granite-gneiss ensembles having Archaean prehistory. These are the Singhbhum Granite Complex in the south and the Chhotanagpur Gneissic Complex in the north. The oldest rocks in Singhbhum Granite Complex include the tonalite-trondjhemite-granodiorite gneiss of about 3800Ma or older. Following deposition of successive supracrustal assemblages including the thick bodies of the banded iron formation, the growth history of the southern block culminated with emplacement of granitoids at ~2500Ma. The Chhotanagpur Gneissic Complex also having Archaean antiquity was subsequently reconstituted during the intrusion of anorthosite at ~1550Ma and the development of granulites at ~950Ma. The depositional history of the North Singhbhum Fold Belt began with opening of basins from ~2200 to ~2100Ma. The basins closed with coeval and deformation and metamorphism at about 1850Ma.
