Abstract

This chapter describes semiconductor lasers with self-assembled quantum dots in the active layer. It summarizes the fundamental properties of quantum dot lasers and presents InAs–GaAs quantum-dot lasers as examples. The quantum-dot laser is one of the most representative candidates for the practical application of quantum-dot structures. The fabrication process, lasing characteristics and problems to be solved are also discussed in the chapter. The chapter describes several key technologies for improving quantum-dot lasers, including closely stacked quantum-dot structures, columnar quantum-dot structures, and quantum dots emitting in long-wavelength region. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how these technologies can be applied in quantum-dot vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL).
