Abstract
This chapter examines the patterns of education in which the upper secondary sector is physically separate from the lower school. The number of schools with this restricted age range is small. At Mexborough, the sixth-form college is separate, yet it shares facilities with the lower school on the same site. Some other schools are separating the sixth form into a sixth-form center, where the older pupils can have a semi-private life in their own domain. Therefore, the advantages of having a sixth form as an integral part of the school and the freedom that comes with a sixth-form college are combined. However, actual experience with this type of organization is very limited, and plans and ideas must figure more largely in the discussion than actualities.
