Abstract

The aim of global system for mobile (GSM) is to develop a digital mobile phone system that will support roaming across country borders. The goals set for the system were tough because no digital system had been launched before and nor had any attempts at roaming on this scale been considered. The chapter stresses the fact that the system has been a considerable success, far outstripping the take-up by any other network beforehand or currently available. GSM not only provides global roaming but also helps manufacturers cater global market and reap benefits from economies of scale. These benefits of cost can be passed on to the consumer as well, making it an attractive solution. The running of the GSM standard has now been passed to 3GPP, the organization that is also controlling the third generation universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) that uses wideband code division multiple access (CDMA). In this way, it is possible for the GSM system and universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) developments to be more closely linked.
