Abstract

Older adults (aged 65 and over) are a rapidly growing segment of the US population. Understanding the unique physiologic changes, comorbidity patterns, and medical and social characteristics prevalent in this population provides the emergency physician with opportunities to improve care for older adult patients. Atypical presentations of serious disease are more common in older patients. Among the most important common issues are frailty, delirium and cognitive decline, functional impairments, fall risk, polypharmacy, and access to adequate social supports and services. Specialized assessment, treatment, disposition, and follow-up processes can improve care for older adult patients in the emergency department.
