Abstract

Teaching skills is by far the most important part of applied behavior analysis treatment and education for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, reducing challenging behaviors is also critical because these behaviors often prevent an individual from learning new skills. Therefore, although the primary focus of education and treatment for individuals with ASD should always be establishing new skills, it is very often necessary to focus heavily on reducing challenging behaviors early on, so that treatment can then become focused on skill acquisition.
