Abstract
This chapter discusses the effect of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) on choroid plexus blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production in vivo in the rat. The choroid plexus is well innervated by sympathetic and cholinergic nerves. Receptors for VIP are demonstrated on epithelial cells purified from the choroid plexus. Functional in vitro studies have shown that VIP and peptide histidine isoleucine enhance [3H]noradrenaline release from sympathetic nerves in the choroid plexus.VIP stimulates production of cAMP in epithelial cells, as does noradrenaline via β-receptors. Intraventricular perfusion with noradrenaline and β-receptor agonists, as well as electric stimulation of the sympathetic nerves supplying the choroid plexus reduces CSF production. As VIP enhances noradrenaline release from sympathetic nerves in the choroid plexus, it is proposed that these two neurotransmitters might act synergistically in this tissue. The actions and interactions of the different neurotransmitters in the choroid plexus are summarized in the chapter.
