Abstract

The legal boundaries of the pharmacy profession are complex and voluminous. This chapter unpacks the laws into four discrete sections. These include state law describing licensing and professional conduct, administered by pharmacy boards; second, federal regulation of drug development, safety, and patient care by the Food and Drug Administration; third the overlapping regulation of controlled substances by the federal government through the Drug Enforcement Administration and state agencies tasked with similar responsibilities; and finally professional liability, or malpractice, in the courts. Taken together, the subject matter provides a basic description of laws that impact pharmacy practice.
