Abstract

Valves are used to stop or control the flow of fluids in piping. The major categories of valves are block, control, and relief valves. Block valves are on–off devices that are used to stop the flow of fluid or gas through a pipe. They are not generally used to control the flow rate. Control valves control the rate of flow of the fluid. They are not normally used for throttling or to ensure a tight shutoff. Control valves usually have block valves on either side so that the flow can be completely stopped and the control valve removed for maintenance. Relief valves are valves that open in response to overpressure in the equipment that they are protecting. This chapter also discussed check valves, emergency isolation valves, valve positioning, steam traps ad rupture disks.
