Abstract
This chapter is the launching off point for looking at different cell chemistries. Each of the major lithium-ion cathode chemistries that are in common use today will be examined and compared from a performance standpoint. Cathode chemistries including lithium iron phosphate (LFP), nickel cobalt manganese (NCM), lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), lithium manganese oxide (LMO), and nickel cobalt aluminum (NCA) will all be reviewed including a description of the differences in function and operation. This chapter examines the crystal structure of each of these materials to help understand why they operate in the fashions that they do.
