Abstract

Algae (micro and macro) are oxygenic aquatic photosynthetic beings and they are ubiquitous but are primarily the precious riches of the ocean. The benefits provided by it form a long list from nutrition to pharmaceuticals to biofuels to wastewater treatment. Due to the increasing use of cosmetics in this modern era, even the cosmetic industry could merely survive without algae, as it is natural, healthier, harmless, and more effective. Algae provides the cosmetic industry with bioactive compounds like fucoidans, fucans, ulvans, carrageenans, tocopherol, vitamins, pigments, flavonoids, astaxanthin, etc., which have shown immense benefits to human skin. The bioactive compounds when merged with cosmetic formulations provide various benefits to the skin such as antiaging, depigmentation, and skin whitening, moisturize the skin, and make it smooth, supple, and glowing. This review discusses the potential use of algal species and their bioactive compounds in the cosmetic industry.
