Abstract

This chapter presents an approach to electronic data processing (EDP) development, which is built upon theory and research from the field of organization development. The approach is developed in two major components: (1) planned change and (2) organization dynamics. Organization development theory is one of several major frameworks available for analyzing organizations and organization dilemmas. It is also a normative theory that describes effective organization, and sets certain behavioral and structural goals for a change process. Both the analytic approach and the normative theories have two major foci: (1) the individual and (2) groups of individuals. Using theories from human behavior and human development, the analytic approach also provides a series of dimensions with which to describe the ongoing dynamics within an organization. The major assumptions about human behavior on which organization development theories and concepts are based are those expressed by Douglas MacGregor in the Human Side of Enterprise.
