Abstract
Line imperfection, i.e., dislocation, plays a significant role in the plastic deformation, for instance, plastic flow of crystals occurs mainly via dislocation motion, dislocation interactions cause strain hardening, and kinetics of plastic flow is controlled by kinetics of dislocation motion. However, this chapter does not intend to be overly concerned with plastic flow, instead, it will be primarily concerned about the fundamentals of dislocations. This includes elementary geometric properties of dislocations, stress fields and energy of dislocations, the relationships between applied stresses, virtual forces, Burgers vector, dislocation line (Peach–Koehler equation), and extended dislocations. While it is impossible to include all the topics related to dislocations, this chapter essentially covers in ample detail the fundamentals of the characteristics of dislocations, including describing in detail the physics and the atomic mechanics of a number of issues.
