Abstract

The pressure variable and its effects on the structures and properties of inorganic compounds are of primary importance in the development of inorganic chemistry. Techniques are now available for generating static pressures of 1–100GPa at both ambient and high temperatures. The scope of this chapter is to introduce high-pressure technique and its application in the field of high-pressure synthesis and preparation of inorganic materials, which includes experimental methods under high pressure, effects of high pressure on basic states of matters, inorganic chemical reactions, and crystal and electronic structures of inorganic compounds, major roles of high-pressure method in inorganic synthesis, and some important inorganic compounds synthesized under high pressure.
