Abstract
The chapter explores several different administrative tasks that an administrator can accomplish using the features of Windows Vista. The Backup and Restore Center and the Backup Status and Configuration utility, which allow backing up system and data files as well as scheduling backup jobs, are discussed in the chapter. The System Restore utility is also a part of Windows Backup and is helpful when the system becomes unstable after updating a device driver or applying some patch to an application. The Print Management snap-in is new in Windows Vista, and it provides a centralized location to manage enterprise-wide printers, drivers, and print jobs. Remote administration is not new to Windows Vista; it was available in Windows XP desktops as well. This feature is helpful in remotely administering Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 computers. The chapter discusses the Task Scheduler utility, which helps in scheduling recurring administrative tasks. Windows Vista comes equipped with three pre-configured power plans: Balanced, Power Saver, and High Performance—each of which is configured to optimize the power used by system components such as the hard disk and the monitor.
