Abstract

Hazard & Operability (HAZOP) leaders were traditionally selected on the basis of their technical competence and experience rather than on the basis of their skills as facilitators. This is now changing and facilitation skills are recognised as an important requirement for HAZOP leaders to equip them to get the best out of their teams and therefore maximise the effectiveness of HAZOP studies. This requires an understanding of group dynamics, team development, individuals’ styles of communication and how to manage these. It also requires the development of specific facilitation skills and techniques and the application of these in the HAZOP environment, together with an understanding of consensus and how to achieve it and how to manage challenging or dysfunctional behaviours in HAZOP meetings.
