Abstract

Increases in the global demand for energy, high fuel prices, and depletion of fossil fuels, as well as concerns of global warming, have led to the search for alternative strategies for energy production. Biofuels are one key alternative option for the substitution of fossil fuels. Biomass serves as a potential renewable source for the production of solid, liquid, and gaseous biofuels. The challenges associated with the commercialization of biomass-derived biofuels can be overcome by process integration as well as fine-tuning of various process variables affecting production. Another major concern is the seasonal availability of biomass. This chapter presents an overview of various types of biofuels produced from biomass, the merits and limitations of biofuels, and future perspectives.
