Abstract

Before proceeding with our primary topic, we need a short discussion about proper seismic processing for amplitude analysis. A complete description of data processing, or only processing for amplitude studies, is beyond this work. Even so, we need to understand something about what's needed for effective analysis of seismic amplitudes. Such processing is important for qualitative amplitude analysis (which will be discussed in the next chapter) as well as for more sophisticated quantitative analysis (which we will explore in subsequent chapters). Whether for qualitative or quantitative work, we must have reflections that come as close to possible to being the result of the properties of the layers on either side of the reflecting surface. Thus, there are some processing issues that need to be addressed for amplitude analysis that are not as critical for a regular seismic stack.
