Abstract

The knee is one of the most complicated joints in the body. This chapter addresses the anatomy, pathology, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of knee pain by answering fifty-nine of the most common questions regarding knee pain. Fundamental concepts, including basic kinematics of the patella, the screw home mechanism of the knee, the open and closed chair movements affecting the knee, and the knee extensor lag, are discussed. The knee is divided into four primary sections, anterior, medial, lateral, and posterior. The primary anatomical structure and its function are specified, and the most commonly associated clinical conditions are discussed. The common tests to assess the integrity of the knee are described. The differential diagnosis for the knee pain arising from each of the four sections is delineated. Essential rehabilitation principles for treating many key clinical conditions, including knee osteoarthritis, are examined. Primary indications for common surgical management, including partial meniscectomy, meniscus repair, and total knee arthroplasty, are outlined.
